Is the “ecofriendly” backpacker community really eco-friendly?

Is there an eco-friendly way to travel without impacting the environment in the places you travel?

In my opinion, the short answer is no. The means and ways to get from A to B, the resources necessary to maintain your stay, and the time that people have to travel makes it virtually impossible to be eco-friendly while we travel.

I think we just have to be realistic about it, ever since the invention of carbon-based forms of transportation our ways of traveling changed drastically, it is now possible to flight around the world in about 30 hours when around 100 years ago that was unheard of. The infrastructure that has to be in place prior to taking that bus, car, or plane is by nature a huge toll to the environment. If i could recall back int o the 14th century, the only means to get from A to B was either by boat, sail, or frigate or by animal means. What this means is that the speed of which we travel has more than quadruple over 200 years. While this might seem like a steady rise, we have to account the billions of people now using these new ways of traveling.
